Mel Ferrer attended the 1971 Cannes International Film Festival
to promote his film "A Time for Loving," which was shown in
competition under the title "An Apartment in Paris."
He served as producer and also had an acting role in the independent film
that featured Joanna Shimkus, Susan Hampshire and Britt Ekland
and was later released in France as "Paris was Made for Lovers." The screenplay was by noted French playwright Jean Anouilh and Christopher Miles
served as director. This film was Ferrer's first appearance as
an actor in over four years.
In the three photos above Mel Ferrer can be seen
arriving at the festival with his
bride
of three months, the former Elizabeth Soukotine. While the heart
of the festival took place at three centralized hotels, the
Hotel Carlton, the Hotel Martinez and the Hotel Majestic,
the Ferrers preferred staying at the Hotel du Cap in nearby
Antibes, arriving only for their scheduled showing. Apparently John and
Yoko Lennon were also there, lodged a few doors down from the
newleweds. The Silver Screen report noted that "Mel Ferrer, now turned gray but looking as dapper and handsome as ever, was accompanied by his wife,
whose uncanny resemblance to Audrey Hepburn was more noticeable
than ever. Mel has
just finished producing 'An Apartment in Paris' and advance reports
about this romantic film are good."
